Movie Night

Join us for a family movie night on Saturday, October 10th at 7pm!

We will be enjoying the film Joshua on the outdoor screen in the Bergstrand's backyard.

(We will meet at the church if the weather does not cooperate!)

We will provide the hot chocolate! Bring a yummy snack to share and cozy blankets to enjoy the movie! Babysitting will be provided for the little ones!

We had a blast apple picking at Jaswell's Orchard in Smithfield! We picked several different kids of apples, sampled a few along the way, enjoyed a free hayride before stopping by the yummy food store at the end of the afternoon! We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day!

Music Together at Saint James

"Dear Families,

I can't wait to see everyone next week for our fall "Fiddle" Collection. As most of you know, this is my FAVORITE collection and I can't wait to teach it for a second time! Some of the songs on it are Ram Sam Sam, Crawdad, Old King Cole, and Shady Grove!

The first day of class is Monday the 21st. Be sure to bring any tuition due the first week in order to pick up your materials.

If you would still like to register, the classes that are open are Monday 9:15, 3:30, 4:30 and Thursday 9:15. If you would like to be on a wait list for a full class just let me know - families change class times frequently, which often opens spots.

Apple Picking!

We will be heading to Jaswell's Farm to go apple picking! If you are planning to attend the 9 am service, pack a picnic lunch and join us in the park next to the church before we head out at 12:00!

"Take Me Out To A Ballgame..."

The congregational community ventured out to a PawSox's game in June. We had a turn out of over 40 adults and more than 20 children! What an amazing night! The group scattered across the stadium and enjoyed running into one another during various walks about the ballpark. If you weren't able to make it this year, watch for the sign-up next spring!

As for the baseball side...it was a tied game until the bottom of the ninth when the PawSox's scored to win the game! Nothing better than good baseball and good fellowship!

Splashing at Spring Lake!

One Sunday in July, our Young Family small group headed out to enjoy some sun and sand at Spring Lake in Burriville, RI. We spent the afternoon slashing in the water, slipping down the water slides, digging in the sand, and enjoying some amazing fellowship time!

Spring Lake is a calm lake with a great sandy beach. It was awesome for families with young children, with convenient parking, an affordable snack bar, and nearby bathrooms. It was clean and kid-friendly!

The day was such a hit that two of the families even returned later that week for a second visit!

Goddard Memorial State Park

Goddard Memorial State Park is located in East Greenwich, RI. It is roughly 480 acres, on the water with 18 miles of bridle/hiking trails, plenty of expansive green space to run/play Frisbee/chase your dog, and 355 picnic tables. There are no entrance fees in RI parks, but you do have to pay and reserve picnic table areas. the costs for rentals are:

Picnic Sites - $2.00 per table
Portable Stove Area (tables only, no fireplaces) - $2.00 per table

Gazebo (includes 3 tables & 2 grills) - $35.00 per day

Picnic Shelter (includes 8 tables and no fireplaces) - $35.00 per day

Fields - $8.00 per day

Picnic season is from April 1st to October 31st, but there is also plenty of space to just put down a blanket and have an old fashion picnic.

There is a beach with a lifeguard on duty 10am-6pm seasonally. There is no parking fee, so this is a great place to take the kids to the beach. There are summer concerts and ice skating in the winter.

Verdict: This is a great place to go with kids, with a friend, spouse, or just by yourself for the whole day or just for a few hours. There are plenty of trails to go hiking on, just watch for the horse poop!

Playground Snapshots!

We had another great "Playground Meet-Up" today! Hugh Cole Playground was enjoyed by all ages - even the Mommies! The only thing we discovered is that we need to change the time to 3:30 pm because of nap time interferences! Hope you can join us next week as we check out "The Baby Park" on the East Side and maybe pop into the fire station!

The Playground Connection

We had a great playground meet-up on Monday! Four families met at the Barrington Playground between 3:00 and 4:00. The kids munched and played while the grown-ups (Moms and Dads!) got a chance to chat! We shared ideas for future playgrounds to visit and simply enjoyed being with other parents.

As the school year is winding down, we hope that you will come out and join us! It's a great chance to connect and build that sense of community that all parents need!

Playground Meet-Ups!

As parents in today's technology-driven society, we often find ourselves home with our little ones with no plans to keep them entertained for the long day and no plans to keep ourselves sane during that long day! Rhode Island and Massachusetts is full of wonderful playgrounds that spark the imaginations of our children and provide adult interactions for Mommies and Daddies!

Starting this Monday, June 8th, we are kicking off the summer with the start of our playground tour! During those long summer days, we are planning to start the week at a different playground each Monday. Not only will we become more familiar with what is available for the little ones to enjoy, we - the parents! - will get to enjoy some time with other adults!

So, after your little ones have rested their weary little heads, come and join us at the playground listed on the sidebar! We plan to meet each Monday (when the sun is shining!) at 3:00pm. Bring a snack for your children (and yourself, if you want!) and come PLAY!

Congregational Community PawSox Game!

We are organizing a trip for the entire congregation to see the PawSox! We plan to take the stadium by storm...St. James style! Sign up in the community room if you are interested. We will begin collecting money shortly so we can pre-buy the tickets. We are looking at General Admission seats which allow us to have access to the grass areas so the little ones can move around. We are hoping for an evening full of fun and fellowship! Hope you are able to join us!

Weekly Devotional Verse

We have added a weekly devotional verse to the sidebar. Our goal is for you take that verse and share it with your family and work it into your daily life. Take some time and explain what God means by the verse and brainstorm how your family can apply it to your daily life. My plan is to print it out and post it in our kitchen so we can refer to it often!

Also, if you have a verse that you or your family loves, please email it to me so we can add it to our list!

Family Camping Night Re-Cap!

Family Camping Night was a "wild" adventure! Almost forty children and parents attending - and all had a great time! The atmosphere was set, complete with tents and a mock campfire!

We began the night by making "warm fuzzies" which were yarn balls that symbolized a hug. During our "get-to-know-you" game, the children exchanged hugs and warm fuzzies as they made new friends! Dana led everyone in a short devotional time where we learned all about God's wondrous creations in nature (Psalms ---). Then the fun began! We rotated between three stations - Stargazing (where we saw the stars projected on the night sky), Crafty Campers (where children and their parents chose between four crafts to create and take home), and Campfire Cooking (where the children constructed an edible campfire complete with roasting marshmallows). The night ended with sleeping bags, flashlights, and campfire songs! We had a great time around the campfire as Nick Eide led us through several rhythmic and familiar songs!

Everyone found something they enjoyed during the stations!

Everyone was comfy in their PJs and used their flashlights to light their paths!

Some jammies were fancier than others!

The night was such a success that there are plans underway for making this a yearly event!

Let's Go Camping!

Join us Friday night (April 24th) at 7:00pm for an indoor camping evening in the church basement! There will be crafts, snacks, star-gazing, and camps songs around a campfire! Bring your flashlights and sleeping bags and wear your PJs! (But don't worry - we are just pretending! You'll be heading home to sleep in your own bed!) Look forward to seeing you there!

We Went to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo!

I spent the afternoon with my family at a great little zoo! We have been members at the Roger Williams Zoo for the best three years and love to go frequently - from early spring right through those occasionally warm days in early November. But today I was in the mood for something a bit different and perhaps a bit less crowded! So on the recommendations of several "mommy" friends, we set off to explore Capron Park Zoo and were pleasantly surprised. It was about a twenty minute drive and easy to find off exit 3 of 95 in Massachusetts. Parking was a bit tight but there was a fairly quick turn-around so we didn't have to wait too long. Admission was reasonable ($5.50 for adults, $3 for children ages 3+) and the park was extremely stroller friendly. It was relatively small - we easily finished the entire zoo in under an hour - and there were no crowds to compete with. We could easily let the children walk around and explore the animals on their own. The exhibits were very well-kept and child-friendly. Each animal habitat had a place where the children could get close to the glass and get a direct view of the animals - no fighting with fences that are in the children's direct line of vision! Also, the zoo-keepers were very friendly and loved to share about the animals. All in all, it was a great day!

Tips
* Bring cash if you plan to eat at the snack bar - no credit cards accepted!
* Wear sunscreen and hats - shade was hard to come by
* Splash Pad is slated to open June 1st
* Amazing playground right outside the fence
* There is a sandbox located inside the zoo

* Bring a camera - great photo ops!

*Be prepared - the entrance is through the gift shop
